Empowering Trails: A Black Woman's Journey in the Great Outdoors

By Chrisha Favors

The outdoors, a sanctuary to many, was not always perceived as a welcoming space for people who looked like me. Yet, my spirit refused to be confined, and my dreams of backpacking through the backcountry remained steadfast.

Representation matters. It’s the spark that ignites the fire of inspiration. When I finally stumbled upon stories of Black women thriving in the outdoors, a newfound sense of belonging washed over me. These stories were the catalysts for my own adventures.

With each step I took, I shattered stereotypes and proved that the trails are for everyone, regardless of their background.

One of my dreams was to be a part of a community that echoed the spirit of inclusivity and support. I longed for a community where people could share their love for the outdoors, exchange tales of the joys and challenges, and uplift one another. Thus, I embarked on a mission to seek organizations that celebrated diversity in the outdoors, encouraging individuals from underrepresented communities to feel a sense of belonging in the outdoor spaces.

I have been an Adventure Guide with Wild Diversity for two seasons and it has been more than just a profession; it has been a journey of passion and purpose. My experience as a backpacking guide with Wild Diversity has been transformative, not just for me, but for the community I've had the privilege to lead. The challenges of the backcountry mirror the challenges of life, teaching me resilience, determination, and self-reliance. Every steep ascent and rocky terrain became a metaphor for overcoming obstacles, reminding me of my strength and capability.

Being a backpacking guide is more than just navigating trails; it’s about nurturing confidence in our community. I have witnessed firsthand the transformation that occurs when individuals, especially those from underrepresented communities, stepped out of their comfort zones. It was awe-inspiring to see faces light up with pride as they conquered summits and crossed challenging terrains.
